Coaching for Education Leaders
"Now, more than ever, education leaders are challenged to extend beyond managing their organizations as they lead their learning communities. Following an unprecedented pandemic, this requires an innovative and creative problem-solving approach. How does one leverage fear with courageous conversations? A focus on deep reflection that results in tangible goal setting through a coaching model creates space for trust and risk-taking. Education leaders who effectively build rapport with their teams establish optimal professional learning communities that are empowered to navigate through difficult times.

Participants will explore the LAUSD Coaching Competencies Rubric that help educators engage in meaningful coaching cycles that build the capacity of staff. After an interactive 60 minutes session, participants will walk away with easy-to-use tools that optimize conditions for reflection and promote a cycle of improvement through the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle. Creating Spaces of Inclusion, Tolerance & Acceptance: Supporting our LGBTQ+ Students
Adult learners will be able to explore, discuss, and reflect upon critical dialogue with their colleagues in working towards an inclusive classroom environment, especially for our LGBTQIA2-S+ (i.e., queer) students. As teacher educators/coaches/and mentors, we are uniquely positioned in shaping beginning teachers and their ability to reflect upon their teaching practice. While content knowledge and instructional guidance typically take precedence, we cannot forget the importance of relationship building, and fostering brave/safe spaces for our students. This session will engage learners in reflection of self, terminology, brief overview of teacher preparation literature, scenario table talk, legal and compliance implications (e.g., EdCode, CSTP) and next steps. This session will encompass ideas from critical pedagogy, adult learning theory, transgender theory, queer theory, transformative learning, critical teacher reflection, culturally responsive school leadership, and adaptive leadership. Finally, this interactive and dialogical session is meant to activate one's awareness of LGBTQIA-2+ youth's voices and begin to take steps in building a more inclusive and visible classroom environment.

New Standards and New TPE's! Preparing Induction Mentor Teachers of Education Specialists
This fall marks the implementation of CTC's new standards and associated Teaching Performance Expectations for the preparation of Education Specialists to teach students with Mild/Moderate Support Needs (MMSN) and Extensive Support Needs (ESN). The new standards and TPE's are built on current needs for equity, inclusion, teacher collaboration, and student-centered learning environments for students with IEPs, an often marginalized group. Mentor teachers and others will be introduced to the new standards and TPE's, and its research framework that promotes carefully-planned, individualized lessons and progress monitoring, as well as incorporation of academic, language, cultural, social and emotional learning. A specific new area of learning for many mentor teachers may be the broadening of credential authorizations to include most of the disability areas in the former Moderate/Severe Education Specialist credential that are now also in the MMSN credential authorization. Participants will then take part in a workshop activity to identify their own areas in which they need to add to their support skills and knowledge. Ideas for guiding induction candidates' Individual Learning Plans will be presented, and many resources will be shared.

SEL: It Starts With Adults
According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional, Learning (CASEL), social-emotional learning (SEL) is “the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.” Often, educators focus primarily on SEL for students, yet the research is clear that cultivating social and emotional skills in educators can lessen depression, burnout, and turnover and increase both job and life satisfaction, engagement, well-being and resilience. Successful and sustainable SEL for students starts with us. If we truly want to boost our students' SEL competencies, then we must first start to be more intentional about strengthening our own social-emotional intelligence and presence. In this interactive and reflective session, participants will learn science and strategies centered on building SEL for adults in order to empower staff, students, and their organization to thrive.

Coaching for Social Justice and Equity: Approaches and Best Practices
In the face of multiple, intersecting pandemics, K-12 schools and leaders are inspired to “imagine [our] world anew” (Roy, 2020), “use the huge disruptions...to reinvent our systems,” (Darling Hammond, Schachner, & Edgerton, 2020, p. v), or be “here for the hard re-set” (Ladson-Billings, 2021). Far from simple, this process requires much of educational leaders, who must match ambitions for change with structures that can enable such change to take root.

Leadership preparation and induction programs which strive to develop transformational, social justice leaders often utilize leadership coaches as an integral part of their programs. Coaches serve as thought-partners, mentors, and trusted confidants who help leaders reflect on their growth, development, and professional goals.  To be impactful in this essential work, coaches require ongoing, intentional professional learning to prepare them to have real-time coaching conversations about issues of inequity and to address the complex and intersecting issues of oppression in school systems.

In this interactive session, we will begin by sharing our Coaching for Social Justice and Equity model, developed over the course of a decade at UC Berkeley's Leadership Programs.  Then we invite you to reflect on and share your own approaches and best practices, so that we may learn from one another.

A Great Leader L.E.A.D.S. With Courage, Connection, and Compassion
According to Gallup, only 32% of the workforce is engaged in their work. Disengaged employees have more absences, are less productive, and can negatively impact workplace morale. On the other hand, when employees have a strong sense of belonging and engagement, they perceive more options to solve problems, are more insightful, collaborate better, and have higher overall performance.

Research shows that emotional intelligence and learned optimism are strong predictors of successful leaders. This is where Leading with Courage, Connection, and Compassion can help. The LEADS Framework stands for: Leans in to Build Belonging and Trust, Engages Employees’ Purpose, Appreciates and Acknowledges All Stakeholders, Demonstrates Empathy and Compassion, Shows Up With Intentional Presence.

It’s about learning to strengthen our self-awareness, compassion, and resilience while also increasing focus, productivity, and strategic thinking. It’s about the ability to strengthen employee engagement, a sense of belonging and connection to the organization, and the capacity to cultivate innovative changemakers.

Pulling weeds does not grow gardens. If we want our employees and organizations to flourish, we need to cultivate the environment in ways that cause people to bloom. Using research-based principles and strategies from the fields of Positive Psychology, Social Psychology, Leadership, and Emotional Intelligence, in this highly active and engaging session, participants will learn the fundamentals of leading with courage, connection, and compassion and how to use those superpowers to create a culture in which both the individuals and the organization can thrive."

Exploring Our B.I.A.S. - Beliefs and Brain Patterns, Identities, Assumptions, and Stereotypes
"Our brains are biased. It’s not a judgmental statement, it’s a factual one. Implicit bias, assumptions, and stereotypes stem from necessary and normal functions of the human brain. Researchers estimate that humans are exposed to 11 million pieces of information per second! If our conscious brains tried to filter and process all of that information, we would overload! Instead, our brains create shortcuts to sort through the vast input and function at their best by making connections between things, pairing concepts, and grouping things together. This associative design mode of our brain is critical to how we perceive, learn, categorize, and interact with the world around us.

The unconscious mental shortcuts that we make about people, though, create problems because we tend to see certain things that generally support our current point of view and miss others. These quick shortcuts in the form of assumptions, stereotypes, and implicit bias about social groups can lead to misjudgments about people and situations that cause hurt, pain, discrimination, injustice and inequities in our classrooms, workplaces, and the community at large.

In this highly informative and interactive workshop, participants will learn the neuroscience and social science about assumptions, stereotypes, identity, and implicit bias. Through the process, participants will become more aware of their own biases and learn research-based strategies designed to disrupt those biases, in order to cultivate a climate of belonging, acceptance, psychological safety, and equity in the classroom, workplace, and world around them."

Survey Design: Theory and Best Practices
Have you ever wished your surveys provide feedback that is actually helpful? Do your educational partners have “survey fatigue?”

In this session, learn a set of easy-to-apply, research-based guidelines for writing survey questions that lead to meaningful feedback. These guidelines are rooted in the process a human brain goes through to provide an answer and the reasons why people sometimes give unhelpful feedback.

After hearing about one LEA’s journey and the end result of revamping surveys across the unit, participants will have an opportunity to practice applying the lessons learned to a survey question of their own.

This session will tap into the conference’s theme of Ignite by re-energizing the creative thinking needed for good survey design and passion that results from meaningful feedback. Gathering helpful information from educational partners and in addressing Common Standard 5 allows programs to be creative. Quality data collection leads to passion and ignites program change.

Have an opportunity to interact with colleagues, be provided with resources related to equity, and learn how equity is incorporated into the LAASC Problem of Practice (PoP) , induction days, individual induction plans, and coaching sessions
Our work is informed by, and based upon, the California Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (CPSEL). Participants will leave this session with specific action steps and strategies that will support equitable student-centered learning environments that promote expression and contributions from marginalized voices.

Supporting a New Generation of Educators - Creating Inclusive Communities With LGBTQIA+ Educators and Students
"Supporting all students is the mission that educators believe in and work toward. While this may be easy to say and get people to agree on, when it comes to implementation, it can seem like an overwhelming task to undertake. In this session we will explore simple and important ways for educational leaders to support students, families and educators that identify at LGBTQIA+. We will experience an activity that increases awareness of our gender bias by looking at how we relate certain visual and social norms on a gender spectrum. We will also take time to deepen our understanding of the differences between sexuality and gender and how important this is for students to feel welcome in an educational environment. We will discuss using inclusive language and how words matter. Participants will leave the session with tangible next steps that they can take to build an inclusive and welcoming program to support a new generation of educators.

The Ripple Effect of Fostering a Culture of Literacy Among Mentors
Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) is focused on creating a Culture of Literacy. The BCSD seeks to develop a culture where members have agency and see themselves as readers with frequent, purposeful, and joyful interactions with text. As a team, New Teacher Development was challenged to embed this work in our professional development (PD) for mentors and new teachers as well as to be role models in promoting literacy. We began seeing the ripple effect of this PD in both mentor and mentee classrooms which is having a positive impact in the way students are engaging with reading. We are excited to share some of these impactful resources with you!
