Supporting a New Generation of Educators - Creating Inclusive Communities With LGBTQIA+ Educators and Students

"Supporting all students is the mission that educators believe in and work toward. While this may be easy to say and get people to agree on, when it comes to implementation, it can seem like an overwhelming task to undertake. In this session we will explore simple and important ways for educational leaders to support students, families and educators that identify at LGBTQIA+. We will experience an activity that increases awareness of our gender bias by looking at how we relate certain visual and social norms on a gender spectrum. We will also take time to deepen our understanding of the differences between sexuality and gender and how important this is for students to feel welcome in an educational environment. We will discuss using inclusive language and how words matter. Participants will leave the session with tangible next steps that they can take to build an inclusive and welcoming program to support a new generation of educators.
