Coaching for Social Justice and Equity: Approaches and Best Practices

In the face of multiple, intersecting pandemics, K-12 schools and leaders are inspired to “imagine [our] world anew” (Roy, 2020), “use the huge disruptions...to reinvent our systems,” (Darling Hammond, Schachner, & Edgerton, 2020, p. v), or be “here for the hard re-set” (Ladson-Billings, 2021). Far from simple, this process requires much of educational leaders, who must match ambitions for change with structures that can enable such change to take root.

Leadership preparation and induction programs which strive to develop transformational, social justice leaders often utilize leadership coaches as an integral part of their programs. Coaches serve as thought-partners, mentors, and trusted confidants who help leaders reflect on their growth, development, and professional goals.  To be impactful in this essential work, coaches require ongoing, intentional professional learning to prepare them to have real-time coaching conversations about issues of inequity and to address the complex and intersecting issues of oppression in school systems.

In this interactive session, we will begin by sharing our Coaching for Social Justice and Equity model, developed over the course of a decade at UC Berkeley's Leadership Programs.  Then we invite you to reflect on and share your own approaches and best practices, so that we may learn from one another.
