Creating Spaces of Inclusion, Tolerance & Acceptance: Supporting our LGBTQ+ Students

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Adult learners will be able to explore, discuss, and reflect upon critical dialogue with their colleagues in working towards an inclusive classroom environment, especially for our LGBTQIA2-S+ (i.e., queer) students. As teacher educators/coaches/and mentors, we are uniquely positioned in shaping beginning teachers and their ability to reflect upon their teaching practice. While content knowledge and instructional guidance typically take precedence, we cannot forget the importance of relationship building, and fostering brave/safe spaces for our students. This session will engage learners in reflection of self, terminology, brief overview of teacher preparation literature, scenario table talk, legal and compliance implications (e.g., EdCode, CSTP) and next steps. This session will encompass ideas from critical pedagogy, adult learning theory, transgender theory, queer theory, transformative learning, critical teacher reflection, culturally responsive school leadership, and adaptive leadership. Finally, this interactive and dialogical session is meant to activate one's awareness of LGBTQIA-2+ youth's voices and begin to take steps in building a more inclusive and visible classroom environment.
